Becoming a Certified Positive Discipline Trainer

The purpose of certification is to support people in becoming fluent in Positive Discipline and Adlerian theory and in becoming familiar and skilled with the practice of teaching experientially to different groups. The certification process is flexible and very supportive. Everyone moves at their own pace, and the organization provides a variety of resources.

To be able to be a Positive Discipline Associate in Training (PDAIT), you need to have taken EITHER the Teaching Parenting the Positive Discipline Way (TP) or the Positive Discipline in the Classroom (PDC) two day workshop. You then send in your Letter of Intent, pay your annual membership fee to the Positive Discipline Association and make a commitment to practice and develop your skills and knowledge.

To become certified EITHER to teach TP or PDC (or both), you need to take both the Teaching Parenting or the Positive Discipline in the Classroom workshops. You then need to practice. Practice in your daily life and by sharing aspects of Positive Discipline as you feel ready.

To prepare for certification, follow these steps:

  • If you want to be able to lead the TP workshops, you need to teach two 7 week parenting classes (one with at least 10 participants) and submit the evaluations.

  • If you want to teach teachers PDC, you need to either lead your own class through the class meeting process or help two other teachers do this and submit evaluations.

  • Note: There is an alternative certification process available for those with extensive backgrounds or varied experience. Contact the PDA Executive Director for more information.

The final step in certification to become a Certified Positive Discipline Associate (CPDA) is a 3 to 4 day “advanced” training in which you get to practice your facilitation skills with a small group of peers.
